A three-hour epic depicting the historical events leading to the unification of China in the third century B.C., "The Emperor and the Assassin" is one of the grandest and most lavish films ever made. The battle sequences alone are worth the price of admission; the computer animated battles in "The Lord of the Rings" pale by comparison. For "The Emperor and the Assassin," tens of thousands of real people are shown. This is no special effects wizardry, it's the REAL THING.
China's pride as a great world empire was poured into this film. The nation's most reknowned actors, designers, and filmmakers were recruited for this definitive telling of the tale of China's birth as a unified kingdom. Li Gong, considered by some to be the most beautiful woman alive today, stars as the concubine of the King of Qin. The film was directed by Kaige Chen, who first gained notoriety in the West with "Farewell My Concubine."
